Surya - The Sun God

Surya is one of the most important Vedic Gods. Surya means “the Supreme Light”.

The term Surya also refers to the Sun, in general. Surya has golden hair and arms. He is extremely bright and radiant. The Sun God is always travelling in a Golden triumphal chariot harnessed by seven horses (are represented as Seven colors of the light) and his Charioteer’s name is Arun.

In Vedism, Surya is known as the visible form of God known as ‘Pratyaksha Daiva’ as every one can see Him every day. He is also known as ‘Sarva Jagat Sarva Sakshi’ – which means that He is the eternal eye witnessing all the things happening in the entire world. He is aware of every thing that happens in the world and none can escape from His gaze. Furthermore, Surya is also considered as form of Vishnu, and hence is also called Surya Narayana. He is also considered as and known as ‘Daiva Choodamani’ (Means a Jewel among Gods) as he is also the benevolent giver and sustainer of Life, Light and Warmth. It is because of His grace and generosity that the world has light and warmth, which are two essential necessities of life sustenance. Lord Surya is also extremely knowledgeable and very wise scholar.

Lord Surya is tawny in spring; during summer he resembles gold, he is white during rainy season; he is pale, grey during autumn; he is copper-coloured in early winter; he is red during late winter. Thus the colours of sun-god caused by the seasons have been recounted. The Sun-god is the dispeller of darkness. He is the deity of great brilliance and is considered the Supreme Soul. Lord Surya is also the cause who brings about the change of seasons in the universe and it is also the sun-god which acts as the pivot of the entire universe.

The Sun gives life force, the power of will, intellect, brilliance, prosperity, success in worldly affairs, wealth, personal conduct, activity, cheerfulness, good fortune, wisdom, ambition, fame, the understanding of the phenomenal world, and the knowledge of medicine.

Surya, The Sun God is essentially prayed for Health, Wealth and Prosperity.
